Saito and Dakota share a fascination with death. Dakota is suicidal while Saito is homicidal, and it seemed like the perfect match to them. Saito had vowed to himself that he would never kill Dakota. Dakota keeps Saito away from his violent tendencies, and Saito keeps Dakota stable, although he isn't entirely sure how a killer could help his mental state. Saito is very protective of his partner, he goes to great lengths to ensure Dakota's safety.
